Flames Take 2nd Place In Rockdale Shootout

ASA Rockdale Shootout - Losers Bracket Final
Lady Yellow Jackets Too Much For Flames

Earl O'Neal Park, Conyers GA -- May 27, 2007

My, oh my could they hit!  They hit to left field, right field and center field.   For the 2nd time on Sunday the Decatur based Lady Yellow Jackets stung the Flames with their one-faceted offensive fireworks show.  The Flames had taken a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the 3rd but two triples and 4 singles later the Jackets had tatoo-ed the Flames with a five-run knockout  punch.

The Flames could only ride the magic bat of Scoop Foulke for so long and just couldn't come up with the big hit when it counted. Foulke, who was absolutely unstoppable all day at the plate, had a double and single with an RBI.  The Flames had gone on top in the top of the 2nd on a Lara Gartner RBI single and gap shot triple by Erika Hoffner that plated two but could only get three other hits in the game on singles from Andrea Cole, Meghan Whipple and Allie Davis.

Flames Beat Extreme - Rematch Set With Jackets

Earl O'Neal Park, Conyers GA -- May 27, 2007

The Flames bats connected for 12 hits including another inside-the-park HR by Scoop Foulke (she had a single also) and beat a worn out Extreme Black team by a 7-1 score.  A 3-run 2nd and 3rd inning put the Extreme on the canvas after they had just won a 11-inning marathon against the Tsunami to earn the right to play the Flames in the Losers Bracket Final.

Andrea Cole swung the other Flames big stick with 4 RBI's on a single and a then a bomb to deep right in the 3rd for a two-bagger.  Allie Davis and Kellie Wooden had two singles and  Erika Hoffner, taking advantage of her blazing speed and bat pop, had a triple .  Jennifer Yancey (RBI), Mary Quattrocchi and Brittany Van Frayen contributed hits also.

Starter Andrea Cole spread out 7 hits over her 4 innings of work and only gave up one run.  Cool Whip finished up the last two going one hit, two strikeouts and no runs

Lady Jackets Blast Their Way Over Flames

Earl O'Neal Park, Conyers GA -- May 27, 2007

For a half an inning this  writer thought "on to the championship, this is going to be a cake walk" (and I bet there some other fans in the same boat)!   The Flames had just put three first inning runs on the board and  things were looking just peachy.  Yep, so much for a cake walk!  The Lady Jackets had one game plan - HIT THE BALL and don't worry about pitching or fielding!!

Doing all of their damage in the first two innings (seven hits and 8 runs), the Jackets stymied the Flames bats after the 1st and captured the right to rest for a game and wait for the losers bracket winner to come to them.  Scoop Foulke, in the midst of just a M-O-N-S-T-E-R  tournament, had half of the Flames hits with a triple and two singles.  Allie Davis, Lara Gartner and Kellie Wooden chipped in singles.

Meghan Whipple started , went two innings then gave way to Andrea Cole (1 hit/0 runs) who pitched the last three innings.

4-2 Win Over Tsunami Keeps Flames  Unbeaten In Winners Bracket

Earl O'Neal Park, Conyers GA -- May 26, 2007

When the proverbial (and literal) dust had settled in a parched Rockdale County, the Flames had earned themselves an extra hour of sleep as they prepared for a high-noon  Sunday winners bracket final showdown.    With the "carrot" being offered up by Coach Brad Cole of "if you win, you get one more hour of sleep", the Flames responded by popping the Tsunami by a 4-2 score.

Scoop Foulke (3 hits for the game -HR, Triple and single) got things going in the first with her usual "once a tournament" inside-the-park homerun on a blast to right field. to put the Flames up by one.   Lara Gartner singled to start the 3rd and came around to score to make it 2-zip.  A  couple of errors, a hit batsman and some heady Flames base-running was good for 2 more in the 4th.  Brittany Van Frayen delivered the other offensive assaults with 1st and 5th inning singles.

Andrea Cole weaved her way through the Tsunami lineup giving up only two hits in her 4 innings of work.  Meghan WHipple finished up for the save.

Defense/Pitching Sparkle - Flames Beat Extreme Black

Earl O'Neal Park, Conyers GA -- May 26, 2007

Perhaps playing their finest game of the year, the Flames got all cylinders firing to blank the Extreme 2-0.  GREAT defense, timely hitting, superb pitching and a general total team effort gave the Flames a huge win in the first elimination game.  Maddie Higginbotham came up big on several plays at 1st base, Allie Davis had a diving catch from her catchers position, the infield and outfield play was impeccable and Meghan Whipple was just "lights out" through her 5 innings of pitching.

Mary Quattrocchi lead of the 5th with a rap to right center and then the next Flame reached on an error.  Miss "Q" would score on a SAC fly by Kellie Wooden and Erika Hoffner finished the damage with an RBI single to give the Flames all the runs they would need.

Brittany Van Frayen (2 singles), Scoop Foulke (single) and Mary (single)  finished out the hitting for the Flames.

The Flames, according to eye-witness reports, were flatter than the pulse line of a Dr. Jack Kevorkian patient on Saturday morning and found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-0 score.  Brittany Van Frayen had 2 singles and Maddie Higginbotham added another as the Flames could only muster 3 hits.  Kellie Wooden and Meghan Whipple, getting about as much support as a divorcee of an Alabama dump truck driver, pitched for the Flames.
