Flames Turn In  Solid Performance In
ASA Season Opener

ASA Season Opener - Elimination Game #4
Flames Ousted by Georgia Impact (Owen)

Heritage Park, McDonough, GA -- April 27,2008

No matter what the "impact", the Flames performed well in their debut of 16-U ASA tournaments for 2008.   A couple hits here or there and things may have been different as the Flames finished out the tournament with a 5th place showing.  The Georgia Impact ousted the Flames by a 4-0 score.   The more experienced team made the plays they needed and just wouldn't let the Flames get any momentum going.  Whether it was a diving outfield catch or a snag of line drive, each time it looked as if something was cooking, the Impact put an end to it.

Liz Schneider had the only extra base hit for the Flames with a double to right in the 2nd. Adding singles were Brittany Van Frayen, Megan Light, Sam Metzler,  Jennifer Yancey, Scoop Foulke and Laura Purvis.

Light started and went two innings , followed by Meghan Whipple for 3 and Foulke pitched the last 2.

Flames Falter In 3-0 Loss to Georgia Impact (Kelly)

Heritage Park, McDonough, GA -- April 27,2008

Magician David Blain showed up unexpectedly at Heritage Park early Sunday morning  and unfortunately for the Flames, he made their bats disappear against a savy Georgia Impact Kelly pitching duo. A 3rd inning bunt single by Allie Davis was all the Flames could muster on their way to a 3-0  loss.  The Flames had their chances as they loaded the bases in the 3rd with no outs and the top of the order due up.  Two strikeouts and an infield popup later they were still staring at a scoreboard goose egg!

Meghan Whipple pitched the 1st 3 innings (gave up one run) and Scoop Foulke finished out the game.

East Cobb Cobras Blank Flames 4-0

Heritage Park, McDonough, GA -- April 26,2008

Purported as one of the better teams in the state, the East Cobb Cobras wouldn't let the Flames get much offense going and the end result was a 4-0 loss   Things looked bright in the 1st after a 5 pitch inning by starter Andrea Cole but it got a little dicey after that as the Cobras scored twice in the 2nd and then 2 more in the 3rd off reliever Meghan Whipple.  Whipple blanked the Cobras after that but the only offense for the Flames was a 1st  inning single and a 4th inning double by Brittany Van Frayen and a single by Whipple in the 6th.

Flames Prevail in Nail Biter

Heritage Park, McDonough, GA -- April 25,2008

It wasn't "just" another pool game in McDonough Friday night.  The Flames, with a little sense of urgency, needed to get off to a quick start in a star-studded tournament.  Rising to the occasion, the Flames did just that as they delivered a  thrilling 2-1 win over the Georgia Fire Red.

With starter Scoop Foulke's meticulous disposal of every Fire batter she faced, the Flames came to bat in the top of the 4th at 0-0,  After a ground out, Megan Light reached on an error and then advanced to 2nd on a perfect sacrifice bunt by Lara Gartner.   Allie Davis battled four 1-2 count pitches before drilling a one hop croquet-wicket shot between the legs of the Fire 2nd baseman to plate Light for the1st run of the evening for the Flames.

An 11-pitch 3 strikeout  inning by Foulke in the bottom of the 4th set the stage for a top of the 5th rocket RBI double down the 3rd base line by Brittany Van Frayen to complete the Flames scoring.   Light came in to pitch the 5th and continued the perfect game by Flames pitching with a 3-up/3 down stint.   Things got real sticky in the bottom of the 6th as the Fire opened with a single and an error to put runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs.  A strikeout and a ground out brought the Red within one and they had the tying run perched at 3rd.    In one of the more briefer trips to the mound in recent history, Coach Mike Yancey looked Light in the eye and commanded "Don't take no crap" and turned on his heel and was gone.  Point taken...4 pitches later, Light recorded her 2nd K of the inning and the Flames had the victory.

Van Frayen led the offense with a 3-3 night and Jennifer Yancey and Andrea Cole recorded singles.

Foulke was lights out on the hill for the Flames as she punished the Fire with her high heat all night and only allowed one hit on the way to her complete-game shutout performance.
