Flames Quiet In USFA State Tournament

USFA State Tournament - Game #2
Home America Falcons Bounce Flames Out of State Tourney

Sandy Plains Park, Marietta, GA -- June 30, 2007

The elusive big hit was conspicuously missing on Saturday as the North Fulton Flames dropped the first two games of the USFA State Tournament in Marietta, GA and and were unceremoniously knocked from their perch as reigning USFA 14-U State Champs.  Given some golden  opportunities (bases loaded in the 3rd inning followed by  one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 4th inning), the Flames failed to deliver either time and were shutout 4-0.

In the 3rd inning, with the aid of 2 walks and an error sandwiched around two strikeouts, the Flames had the bases loaded but a ground out to first failed to quench the scoring drought.   Scoop Foulke led off  the 4th with a double to right center and that was followed by a single by Megan Light and the Flames had something going again.   Light was thrown out at 2nd trying to steal, but Liz Schneider walked and then stole 2nd to put runners in scoring position with one out.  A lazy infield pop-up and ground out later found the flames still sporting a "0" in the runs column.  Erika Hoffner had the only other hit for the Flames with a last inning single.

Andrea Cole started for the Flames and pitched the 1st two innings.   Foulke pitched the 3rd  and 4th.

USFA State Tournament - Game #1
Vipers Nip Flames 3-2 In State Opener

Sandy Plains Park, Marietta, GA -- June 30, 2007

Being exhorted by Flames fan Ruth Whipple to "get 'er done", the Flames fell one run short in a last inning comeback bid.  Trailing 3-1 going into the last inning the Flames put Erika Hoffner on base with a leadoff single.  Scoop Foulke followed up with a one out RBI double but that was as much as the Flames had left as they fell to the Georgia Vipers 3-2.

The Flames had pushed across one run in the 1st as Hoffner led off with a single, moved to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt, stole 3rd and came home on another sacrifice fly.  The Vipers tied it up in the 4th and then took the lead in the 5th when they got a one-out triple to left followed by a sac bunt, a single and an error.

Other hits by the Flames were collected by Andrea Cole (2 singles), Foulke (single), Brittany Van Frayen (single) and Meghan Whipple (single).

Megan Light started for the Flames and pitched into the 2nd and was relived by Whipple with one out and bases loaded.  Whipple pitched out of the jam and was aided by a nice running catch by left fielder Kellie Wooden.
